In the Football Transfer Tavern, we have been thinking about how both Manchester United and Arsenal have been under par in recent years. Neither side has won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson left United, indicating a problem for both English titans.

They have had varying problems, as the Gunners’ long-serving manager Arsene Wenger has been unable to revolutionise his approach enough to lead the club to a league title.

United, meanwhile, have so far failed in their attempts to bring in a manager and players capable of winning the Premier League.

The Red Devils will be determined to figure out ways to make up for their previous shortcomings and will feel that they will be able to to do so on their own.

Still, it could help them along the way if they were to look at their rivals.

In fact, the North London giants could serve as both an inspiration and a warning to the Manchester giants in equal measure.

Stagnating is Fatal

Manchester United have spent the last couple of seasons stagnating, with mediocre signings and an unimaginative style.

However, this season they seem to have taken a big step forward after bringing in Jose Mourinho as manager and players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

There have been seasons in the past where Arsenal haven’t signed much quality in the transfer windows and have relied on the same players and that tactic hasn’t worked.

It has seen them stagnate and after seeing them fall away because of that, Manchester United need to ensure that this doesn’t happen to them.

Animosity is Toxic

There has been a lot of animosity shown towards Arsene Wenger, his players and the Arsenal board by sections of the supporters, something that has been toxic for the club.

Boos can often be heard ringing around the Emirates Stadium and the Red Devils can’t allow for that to happen.

There were a lot of times under Louis Van Gaal when the fans were far from satisfied and now they have the new manager in and a new set of players, they need to ensure that they impress the fans with their football.

If the supporters start to turn on the players, then opposing teams will find it much easier to get results at Old Trafford.

Size doesn’t matter

Arsenal’s move to the Emirates Stadium was meant to be what took the club to the next level.

They would be bringing in more supporters and more income, though the club haven’t won a league title since they moved to their new home.

It goes to show that just getting people through the door shouldn’t be a priority and that what happens on the pitch is much more important when it comes to success.

Manchester United already have a big stadium, but they need to make sure that they perform on the pitch, otherwise the impact of their magnificent stadium will decrease.
