With the January transfer window due to open in only three months time, a number of clubs will be looking to add to their depth in quality but not wanting to spend mega bucks in order to so.

Southampton are no different, and with having to juggle European nights and Premier League fixtures, it’s easy to see why some more depth could be needed at the club.

So with funds being tightened due to it being the January window and not the Summer window- why shouldn’t they look in the Championship or League One for potential recruits?

We feel that the Saints would really benefit from the lower leagues- considering that their captain Jose Fonte has been with them since they were a League One side it shows the quality there is out there in the lower league.

Having progressed through the league system’s at meteoric rate themselves, looking lower down the pyramid may well be a good shout.

With that here are THREE lower league gems Southampton must look to sign in January.

Will Hughes

With Derby struggling and not looking like a return to the Premier League’s elite anytime soon, the players’ loyalty will be surely questioned.

The 21-year-old midfielder is a regular youth English International and has been a stand out star during his time with the Championship club, a move to the premier league will surely happen for him sooner rather than later.

So why not Southampton?

Nahki Wells

The Bermudian forward has been a standout player in Huddersfield’s rise to the top of the Championship this campaign.

At 26-years-old he needs to be given the chance in the Premier League- with his proven goal scoring record in the lower leagues and the Saints struggling for goals, it seems like a perfect match.

He will have a lot to offer still at only 26 but now would be the best time for him to make the move before it becomes too late.

Josh Morris

The 25-year-old is a central midfielder who is currently with League One leaders Scunthorpe United.

He is also currently the top goalscorer in League One with Scunny making a brilliant start to their league campaign and sitting pretty at the top.

At the age of 25, he must make the move up fast and with his form the League One side would be rather reluctant to let him leave but with a half decent bid the money would talk to the lower league outfit.

With making the big step up it’d be a calculated risk from the Saints but one that could pay off.
