Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are revelling in their side’s wonderful start to the new season, which has this week seen them take their Premier League form into the Champions League.

Jose Mourinho’s men won their first three league matches of the campaign without conceding a goal to underline their title credentials, with West Ham, Swansea City, and Leicester City all coming unstuck against the Red Devils.

And although they drew 2-2 at Stoke City last time out, they responded by beating Basel 3-0 in their first Champions League group match of the season on Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku, and Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford.

And that will give Mourinho’s men much confidence heading into Sunday’s clash at home to Ronald Koeman’s Everton, where they will seek to enhance their position at the top of the Premier League.

Nonetheless, speculation is still somewhat focused around who United may look to sign over the course of the campaign, and a recent report from SportBild (via Sport Witness) has linked the Red Devils with a move for Mesut Ozil.

The Arsenal midfielder is out of contract at the end of the current season and, as of yet, has not agreed an extension with the Gunners, leaving the North London outfit in the precarious position of losing him on a free in the summer.

And it appears that United are seeking to exploit that, and with Ozil having played under Mourinho before at Real Madrid, here are THREE reasons why the Portuguese boss must seek to reunite with the 28-year-old at Old Trafford…

The stats don’t lie

Ozil may sometimes flatter to deceive, but when you take a look at his contributions since moving to Arsenal, the stats simply don’t lie.

The German World Cup winner has scored 32 goals and laid on 57 assists in just 165 matches for the Gunners, which equates to a direct contribution every 157 minutes.

Add in that the last two Premier League campaigns have seen him lay on in excess of ten assists on both occasions, and the midfielder continues to have an impact in the final third of the field.

Creativity, and putting the ball in the back of the net, was United’s biggest issue last term – with Ozil in the team, ample chances will be created, and with Lukaku up top, ample will be scored.

Produced his best under Mourinho before

Ozil rose to fame when he signed for European giants Real Madrid back in 2010, the same year Mourinho took over as manager at the Bernabeu.

And the Portuguese coach quickly made the German his main man at the Spanish outfit, with the 28-year-old laying on 19 assists in La Liga in the 2010/11 campaign, but then going on to better that by one the season after to help Mourinho’s men win the title – he was also on the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or in 2011 to underline his brilliance.

In all, Ozil scored 27 goals and laid on 81 assists during his time in the Spanish capital, so he and Mourinho clearly know how to get the best out of the 28-year-old – a partnership that could again come to fruition at United.

Adds further quality and depth to United’s attack

Ultimately, it was United’s tally of just 54 Premier League goals that let them down last term, with too many draws against so-called lesser sides causing their downfall.

And although things appear to be different so far this time round, it remains to be seen whether they can continue in that same vain all season.

Thus, making a move for Ozil would add further depth and, more importantly, even greater quality to the Red Devils attacking ranks, giving Mourinho much to choose from over the course of the campaign as they juggle domestic and European commitments.

Clearly, Ozil can be a match-winner, and having someone like that in your ranks can only be of benefit to Mourinho and United in their quest for silverware this season.
