Mauricio Pochettino can be credited with a great many things in his time at White Hart Lane, and the Spurs fans in the Football Transfer Tavern love him…

The Argentine manager has given Tottenham a clear identity after bringing in his high-pressing game, as well as nurturing and improving nearly all the players in the current squad.

Another string to Poch’s bow is that he seems to be a good disciplinarian; you get the feeling no player can rest on their laurels if they want to stay in the side.

This has been shown, as well, by Spurs showing no less than seven players the door – some of which had been important squad players over the last two seasons.

Poch clearly felt they weren’t good enough for the next level, and now that Spurs have Champions League football – players that once seemed so important may also find themselves surplus to requirements.

Jan Vertonghen

The first man on the list is the big Belgian.

It may come as a surprise to those who only see him every now and then on Match of the Day, but Vertonghen isn’t actually that popular with Spurs fans around the Tavern.

A solid player when he arrived in 2012, the former-Ajax man seems to have stood still while the rest of the side improved around him.

In fact, there was little difference in the side while Vertonghen was out and Kevin Wimmer deputised, showing he may well be expendable should the time come to move on.

Tom Carroll

More than one punter here at the Tavern felt Spurs made a mistake with which local lad they sold.

With Ryan Mason moving to Hull, a lot of Spurs fans in attendance were bemused as to why Tom Carroll had been kept around.

The midfielder has been relatively ineffective in a Spurs shirt, having had little attacking or defensive impact on the side.

If Poch is looking for players he can do without, Carroll would be near the top of the list.

Kieran Trippier

Kieran Trippier’s inclusion on this list is a little harsh; the former-Burnley man has always done pretty well in a Tottenham shirt.

It has been unfortunate for Trippier that Kyle Walker has just been a bit better, coming on leaps and bounds under Pochettino.

It’s actually because Trippier is so good that it may be time to move on.

He only appeared in six league games last year, although he did manage another 13 in Europe and the cups.

Trippier is good enough to play in the Premier League and should, therefore, be looking for a move elsewhere rather than settling for a place on the bench.
