With the news that Alexandre Lacazette has rejected the chance to move to Newcastle United and the Premier League, the Magpies will be swiftly looking elsewhere for alternative targets.
McClaren knows that he desperately needs to start winning games sooner rather than later as he looks to move out of the Premier League relegation zone, and in order to do so he will need to look at other forward options who would bolster his side’s goalscoring potential.
The fact that the Magpies saw a club-record bid of £22 million accepted by Lyon and yet Lacazette still favoured to stay in France, which suggests that the club were perhaps being slightly ambitious in their efforts and should perhaps be looking for more realistic targets who would actually consider the move.

Charlie Austin
One potential forward that Newcastle could realistically look into signing is Queens Park Rangers’ Charlie Austin. The 24-year old finished last season as the fourth top goal scorer in the Premier League, managing to net on 18 occasions. Despite his best efforts though, his team were relegated.
However, the Englishman has managed an equally impressive tally so far this season with 10 league goals in 12 appearances in the Championship. This has led recent reports to suggest that a whole host of sides are interested in luring the Austin back to the top tier of English football, including Crystal Palace and
Austin is a proven goalscorer and may be the man that Newcastle need to climb the table.
Emmanuel Adebayor
The Togolese striker is certainly obtainable at the moment as he is currently without a club having left Tottenham at the end of last season.
The 31-year old would only be a short term option, not only because of his age, but also because of his reputation for moving between clubs.
Adebayor is another striker who has attracted the attention of Crystal Palace, who are rumoured to be lining up an offer for the striker. However, the fact that the London side have reportedly had to insert a break clause into the offered contract that would be triggered should the striker breach the club’s disciplinary rules may put Newcastle off signing him.
However, Newcastle might benefit from a player who is level with Peter Crouch in the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts, having 96 league goals throughout his career.
Loic Remy
Another striker who may be available according to the press is Chelsea’s Loic Remy.
Newcastle fans will certainly be familiar with the Frenchman, who completed an impressive season-long loan at the club during the 2013/14 campaign, which ultimately saw him join the Stamford Bridge side in a £10.5 million move.
However, since then, Remy has struggled to maintain a consistent run of appearances and has largely played second fiddle to Diego Costa. Even when the Spaniard has been unavailable, winger Eden Hazard has been played up front instead.
It has recently been reported by the Telegraph that Galatasaray are ready to take him on loan for the rest of the season. However, should Newcastle make a move for the 29-year old, he may well be open to a return to St. James’ Park.
The 29-year-old is undoubtedly a talented striker and might flourish once again in the North East if the Newcastle team was built around him. However, with Radamel Falcao set to leave Chelsea, it might be difficult for the Blues to allow Remy to leave as well, unless they manage to acquire a striker for themselves, with Jamie Vardy linked.
Kelechi Iheanacho
Perhaps the most unknown of the strikers that we think Newcastle should take a look at, Kelechi Iheanacho is currently plying his trade at title hopefuls Manchester City.
However, with Sergio Aguero in the City squad, the young Nigerian is going to find it extremely difficult to knock his Argentine counterpart off of the pedestal any time soon.
Should Newcastle be interested, the Blues may be open to a potential short loan move until the end of the season in order to increase his playing time and to gather some additional first-team experience.
When given the chance, the 19-year old has impressed. Having only started one Premier League game but making 11 substitute appearances, Iheanacho has scored two goals.
The youngster also has 2 goals and 2 assists from 1 start and 1 substitute appearance in the Capital One Cup.
