In 20 years at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, and our resident Gunners fans here in the Transfer Tavern, has seen it all.

He’s witness big wins and heavy defeats, unbeaten seasons and going years without a trophy and yet he still continues with the same hunger that he’s always had, that has to be applauded.

What should also be applauded is the fact that the Frenchman has built arguably his best squad in years this season with the current crop of Gunners players looking like a mature bunch, ready to challenge for the title.

The players look ready to take on any side in the league and are clearly not feeling the weight of any expectation that naturally comes with wearing an Arsenal shirt.

That said, not all players in the past for the Gunners have enjoyed such confidence, some have really shrunk in the spotlight.

Our landlord can certainly think of some with this four being the most prominent… 

Marouane Chamakh

Chamakh is one of those players you look at and think, ‘how on Earth does he keep getting contracts?’

Not once has he impressed during his time in this country with spells at Crystal Palace and of course Arsenal amongst others all proving poor.

He’s now at Cardiff City where it’s up for debate if he’ll be much good but there’s certainly no debate about that at Arsenal.

Gervinho

Gervinho just couldn’t cut it in the Premier League.

As a forward for the Ivory Coast, Gunners fans were hoping that he would be of similar standing to their nemesis Didier Drogba but that couldn’t have proved further from the truth.

Gervinho never used his pace properly and didn’t show much strength whilst his scoring record was poor, too.

An all round disaster then.

Nicklas Bendtner

Speaking of disasters…

This man’s career has been one false dawn after another after he’s somehow repeatedly pulled the wool over people’s eyes to make them believe he has the talent to back up the game he talks.

It appears now that he too has decided to stop giving it the big one and actually try and salvage his career but it’s highly unlikely he’ll be doing that at Arsenal’s level again.

Sebastien Squillaci

Still to this day many Gunners fans here in the Transfer Tavern do not understand the thinking behind this move.

Arsenal, as they always have seemed to up until this summer, needed a centre-back but instead of going for a young, talented and hungry defender they went for Squillaci.

No offence to him, but he was well over the hill by the time Wenger signed him in a very odd deal.
