The Football Transfer Tavern have seen some brilliant signings from Chelsea, with certain players such as Didier Drogba coming in and lighting up not just Stamford Bridge but the Premier League too…

However, for every Drogba there are more than a few players that drift into the background and fail to really leave a mark when they’re signed – and Chelsea have had more than a few transfer disasters in recent years.

In the early Abramovich years, Chelsea could be accused of having more money than sense – and that was reflected by their mixed success in the transfer market.

A host of players came to the club and failed to make much of an impact – but who was the worst?

With that said, here are 4 players who failed to make their mark at Chelsea – agreed?

Andriy Shevchenko

If it wasn’t for the failings of Fernando Torres, then Andriy Shevchenko would probably be remembered a bit more.

A lot was expected of the Ukrainian when he signed from AC Milan, but he really didn’t reach anywhere near the level that Chelsea would have hoped for.

Across three years he made 49 league appearances for the club, scoring just nine league goals in the process – and was soon loaned out to AC Milan towards the end of his time there, where he failed to score a single goal.

He was soon moved onto Dynamo Kyiv after failing to make any real impact.

Mateja Kezman

There were high hopes for the exciting Serbian Mateja Kezman when he joined Chelsea.

He had been tearing up the Eredivisie, scoring 31 goals in 29 league games in his last season with the club.

However, he only managed one season at Stamford Bridge, scoring seven goals in all competitions before being moved on.

He went on to play for the likes of Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Zenit Saint Petersburg but never managed to get anywhere near the form he showed in Holland.

Papy Djilobodji

The signing of Papy Djilobodji is arguably the most bizarre in Chelsea’s recent history.

After signing from Nantes, he managed just one game for Chelsea, which came against Walsall and in which he only actually played one minute.

He was then loaned out to Werder Bremen before being sold to Sunderland. Bizarre.

Steve Sidwell

Nobody really understood the signing of Steve Sidwell when it happened and they never got an answer as to why it was a good move to make while he was at Stamford Bridge.

Sidwell had been good for Reading, but it was doubtful that he would be able to get into the side with players like Michael Ballack, Claude Makelele, Frank Lampard and Michael Essien taking up the centre midfielder positions.

Sure enough, he left after one season and seven league starts to join Aston Villa.
