Celtic fans have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this season as their side continue their ruthless domination of Scottish football.

Brendan Rodgers’ men finished last term unbeaten in all domestic matches to secure the Scottish Premiership title as well as the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup, and they have started this season in similar fashion with five wins and a draw from their opening six league matches.

However, their limitations have again been exposed in Europe, with Rodgers’ men thumped 5-0 by big-spending Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last week, and it doesn’t get much easier as Carlo Ancelotti’s Bayern Munich are also in their group.

Nonetheless, there has been some good news at Celtic Park in recent times, as defender Dedryck Boyata looks set to pen a new deal with the Scottish giants.

The 26-year-old moved to Celtic back in 2015 following time at Manchester City and has since gone on to appear 64 times for the Bhoys, in turn winning two Premiership titles.

However, Rodgers may still be looking to reinforce his defensive options when January comes around, and thus here are FIVE centre-backs they should be targeting ahead of the New Year…

Tosin Adarabioyo

One former Manchester City defender has already gone on to work wonders at Celtic (Boyata), and the Bhoys should try and repeat the trick in January by landing Tosin Adarabioyo.

The 19-year-old has made just four senior appearances for the Citizens and none in the Premier League, this highlighting the embarrassment of riches at the Etihad Stadium, but also his need to be playing regular first team football.

And moving to Celtic in January could give him that, in a move which would certainly benefit all parties involved, not least Rodgers, who’d have another talented defender in his ranks at Celtic Park.

Jean-Kevin Duverne

Celtic were reportedly interested in bringing Lens centre-back Jean-Kevin Duverne to the club back in the summer, although no move materialised before the August deadline.

Nonetheless, they could seek to reignite their interest in January, as the 20-year-old has been mightily impressive for the Ligue 2 side since breaking through into the senior team last year.

The Frenchman missed just one of their 38 league matches last term to help them to a fourth place finish in the second tier, just a point behind second place Amiens, who secured automatic promotion to the top-flight.

And Celtic should look to use their lofty status, trophy-winning pedigree, and European football commitments in a bid to lure the defender to Celtic Park in January.

Andreas Christensen

Antonio Rudiger’s arrival at Chelsea has seen Andreas Christensen fall to fifth in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, and he thus may not get the minutes he would have been hoping for this season.

Thus, could a move to Celtic be in the offing?

The 21-year-old has started two of their four Premier League games as well as their solitary Champions League clash so far, and could get more minutes given David Luiz’s recent suspension, yet when everyone’s fit, he’s unlikely to even make Antonio Conte’s bench.

And at his age, Christiansen needs regular football to continue his rapid development, and he’d more likely get that at Rodgers’ Celtic than Stamford Bridge.

Calum Chambers

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers is another who is unlikely to command a regular starting berth this term, but needs minutes in a bid to help him reach his full potential.

The England international has yet to feature for Arsene Wenger’s side this season given his lowly position in the pecking order, yet was unable to secure a move away from the Emirates during the summer.

Nonetheless, if the 22-year-old remains a surplus at the North London outfit, Rodgers should look to land him, as he impressed at Middlesbrough last season, and certainly has the potential to go and become a quality defender.

Albeit often a right-back, Chambers was used often as a centre-back at Boro (19/26 appearances) to suggest that it’s a position he is growing into, and thus one he can excel in for Celtic.

Robert Huth

A long shot perhaps, but Robert Huth is out of contract at Leicester City next summer, and has yet to make a senior appearance for the Foxes this season.

Yes, much of that is down to ankle surgery he had back in July, but two starts for the Under-23 squad in Premier League 2 suggests that he’s working his way back to full fitness, which makes his exclusion from their most recent matchday squads slightly puzzling.

And with summer signing Harry Maguire starting well alongside Wes Morgan, it remains to be seen whether the 33-year-old returns to the starting line-up, and Celtic must seek to take advantage of any uncertainty in January.

It was only 18 months ago that Huth was helping Leicester win the Premier League title – his defensive expertise would make a huge difference to Celtic in their quest for further glory this season.
