5 players England have to leave behind this summer

Share

This summer sees a summer of football for England fans after the national side eased to qualification for the finals of EURO 2016 in France.

It’s becoming the last chance saloon for many players to convince England head coach Roy Hodgson that they are worthy of a place on the plane to France this summer.

Two important games that will really test the players are upcoming in the next week with a trip to Germany followed by a home game against the Netherlands, which will really show how far we can go this summer.

Of course, there will be players who are guaranteed their place on the plane, but do they really deserve to be taken if their club form has not been great? Or if they have only recently returned from injury? These are the questions that can only be answered by one man.

Saying that though, our main man in The Transfer Tavern, the landlord, has been going through the players Hodgson has used during his time and come up with five names he feels shouldn’t be on the plane to France.

Marcus Rashford

The youngster has been in great form since breaking into the Manchester United side and has played the last eight games and scored on five occasions.

Speculation has persisted that the youngster has been on the radar of Roy Hodgson for a possible call up, but in our opinion it would be wrong at this point in his career for him to be on the plane to France and we think he should be left to develop naturally rather than rushed through.

Theo Walcott

Walcott

Mr inconsistant for so long has shown a lot of promise throughout his career but has failed to shine when called upon.

Has never really hit the heights expected for club or country and could be one of the big names left at home this summer.

Walcott’s club career also appears to be up in the air spending a majority of the season used as a substitute and that lack of playing time can only affect his chances of a call up.

Wayne Rooney

England’s all time leading scorer is currently injured and it’s unknown as yet whether or not he will be fit for the summer.

It looks highly unlikely that he will get the competitive playing time required for the summer, and it would be wise of Hodgson to leave him at home.

Previous international finals have shown the lack of depth within the squad, through taking injured players with you and with England looking to impress this could well be the time not to take the risk.

Jack Wilshere

Wilshere

Although Roy Hodgson admits that Wilshere is still in his plans for EURO 2016 his injury problems are surely going to count against him.

Yet another stop start season through injury for the Arsenal midfielder make him a big risk to take Wilshere to France.

Although expected back for his club shortly his injury record speaks for itself and the guarantee of him making through the tournament remains uncertain.

Andros Townsend

Townsend

It has proven to be an eventful season for Townsend who began the season with Tottenham and is now plying his trade in a relegation battle with Newcastle United.

A public fallout with the management at Spurs led to him being left out of the squad and forced to train with the Under 21’s.

Has shown brief glimpses of what he is about during his time with Newcastle but has not done enough in the landlords eyes to convince him that he is worthy of a place in the plane to France in the summer.
