The Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are busy getting on the tequilas this evening, as they drown their sorrows after being defeated by Sevilla in the Europa League final.
The Reds faithful know that if their side had won the competition on Wednesday evening they would have been playing in the Champions League next season, which would have made signing players in the summer a lot easier.
The ardent supporters know that it hasn’t been a season to remember domestically although they also reached the Capital One Cup Final earlier in the campaign.
If Liverpool are to secure a place in the top four of the Premier League next season they are likely to have to spend big during the summer and could even smash their record transfer fee of £35 million, which the club paid for striker Andy Carroll.

Dimitri Payet
Whilst it is hard to image Liverpool even making a bid for West Ham United’s man of the moment, the thought of him playing with the current crop of talent at Anfield is really a superb thought.
On current form the Frenchman could probably play for any other club in the world and the Hammers have a real asset on their hands at present.
It would take way in excess of the £35 million which currently stands as Liverpool’s record transfer fee to sign Payet, but boy would he be worth the money.
Still only 29-years-old, Payet now has one year of Premier League football under his belt, which makes his signing even more appealing.
Neven Subotic
A player Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp knows all about is Borussia Dortmund defender Subotic and the Reds would surely love to sign the Bosnian.
Klopp will look to strengthen his defence in the summer and the 27-year-old warrior would be classed as a real coup for the Reds, should a deal be put in place.
Subotic has played close to 200 games for the German giants and although he has remained loyal to Dortmund over the years, a reunion with Klopp could be a tempting proposition for the player.
Granit Xhaka
Liverpool have a void to fill in the middle of the park for a defensive midfielder who is of world class ilk, and the Borussia Monchengladbach man definitely fits that bill.
Xhaka is highly linked with a move to Arsenal this summer but what a statement of intent it would be should Liverpool nip in ahead of them for the youngster.
The 23-year-old looks like a real star and his performances since bursting onto the scene at Basle in 2010 have been extremely impressive.
The Swiss international is likely to be a big player for his country during this summer’s European Championships, following which a decision on his next club will probably be made.
Alvaro Morata
The Juventus forward looks set to make a move elsewhere during the summer and the player would be a quality addition to the Liverpool ranks.
Attacking quality is something which Liverpool don’t overly lack, but world class quality they certainly do and the Spanish striker would add that in abundance.
The livewire striker is wanted by Arsenal too with both the Gunners and Liverpool desperate to bolster their attacking ranks this summer.
Whether Liverpool have £51 million to spend on one player remains to be seen, but Morata would be a decent signing nonetheless.
Joe Hart
Whilst it might not take Liverpool a record fee to secure the signing of the England goalkeeper, the fact he is English in the first place will probably add several million pounds onto his valuation.
Hart is a solid performer when it comes to the Premier League and has rarely disappointed in a Manchester City shirt.
The incoming Pep Guardiola could choose to bring his own stopper to the Etihad Stadium however, which could make Hart available for a summer switch elsewhere.
Liverpool are desperate for a goalkeeper to replace the inconsistent Simon Mignolet and Hart would be an accomplished signing for the Reds.
