Over the last decade or so the fortunes of Liverpool have declined even further, to the point where they are no longer considered to be one of the top clubs in the country.
They have got a bit of a reputation for themselves of being a selling club rather than a buying one, with several of their top players being sold over recent seasons.
This is what frustrates Reds’ supporters more than anything as they look at what could have been a squad of the highest quality, had they managed to keep hold of all their stars of recent seasons.
New manager Jurgen Klopp could finally change that mindset as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging on all fronts in the coming seasons, but here we look at FIVE players that maybe that shouldn’t have sold when they did…..

Fernando Torres
Torres joined Liverpool for around £20 million in 2007 and proved to be a massive favourite at Anfield, until his departure in the January transfer window of 2011 for a record fee of £50 million to Chelsea.
Torres was a natural goalscorer during his time on Merseyside, scoring 65 goals in only 102 Premier League appearances, including 24 in his debut season.
Things have gone downhill for both parties since his departure, he managed only 20 goals in 100 league appearances for Chelsea before moving back to Spain.
How Liverpool fans would have loved to have seen Torres and Suarez up front together!
Luis Suarez
A controversial figure but there is no doubting the footballing ability of Luis Suarez.
He signed for the club around about the same time as the departure of Torres in 2011 and proved to be a huge favourite at Anfield.
He very nearly carried the club to their first Premier League title in 2014 with 31 league goals, but after missing out on the final day he joined Barcelona for a massive £75 million that summer.
Reds’ fans will probably acknowledge that they are unlikely to see a striker as good as Suarez again, a total of 82 goals in 133 appearances tell its own story on that front, and what a job he is doing at Barca.
Xabi Alonso
It seems like an age since Xabi Alonso was gracing the Anfield turf and what Liverpool fans would give to see him back there.
It is now seven years since he was snapped up by Real Madrid for £30 million after five years at Anfield.
A scorer of the famous Champions League final in 2005, he was hugely popular on the red side of Merseyside.
Like many other big name players at Liverpool in recent times, he failed to lift the Premier League title but has done okay for himself since.
He has won nine major trophies in the seven years since leaving Liverpool, including the World Cup and the Champions League.
Javier Mascherano
Mascherano had a big impact at Liverpool during a relatively short career at Anfield.
He made only 94 league appearances during his three-year spell before he was signed by Barcelona in 2010.
He failed to win a single trophy at Anfield, though, despite some superb performances in their midfield but is another player that has gone on to much bigger and better things since leaving, winning 13 major trophies during his six years at Barcelona to date.
Raheem Sterling
Probably the most controversial transfer on this list when the youngster moved to Manchester City last summer for a reported £50 million.
A lot of people at Anfield were angered by his decision after he had progressed through their academy, and many fans just saw him as a mercenary who moved for money.
After making his league debut for Liverpool in 2012 he went on to make nearly 100 Premier League appearances before his controversial switch.
He is a player with rising stock in the game as he has shown in glimpses so far at City and Liverpool will be gutted to not have him on their side anymore.
