Out of most players that have been heavily linked with a transfer away from their current club this summer, joining the likes of Gonzalo Higuain is David De Gea who still remains at Manchester United despite being linked with Real Madrid for months now.
Left out of Manchester United’s matchday squads for the games against Tottenham last weekend and Aston Villa last night, De Gea has been described as being non-eager to play and this tells you all you need to know about his intentions really.
Clearly holding out hope of a return to his home city before the window slams shut on September 1st, the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has been adored in recent seasons at Old Trafford, so much so that’s he’s received Sir Matt Busby’s Player of the Year prize for back-to-back campaigns – some feat for a non-outfield United player.
Having brought Sergio Romero to the club this summer, the Argentine number one has made a smooth transition into the squad and has kept net admirably in his first two appearances for the Red Devils.
When Real Madrid signed Kiko Casilla from Espanyol earlier this summer, it had appeared as if De Gea wouldn’t be moving with Keylor Navas then receiving the number one shirt but in more recent weeks, it appears as if Navas could only be temporarily holding onto that jersey number.
Only time will tell of course but we’ve devised five reasons why Manchester United should give up while allowing David De Gea to leave Old Trafford for Real Madrid this summer.

Because he’s already gone past the point of no return
While he’s of course still a world class goalkeeper in every regard Manchester United fans, can any of you really claim that the current situation surrounding the Spaniard is ideal?
In what is a clear case of the player’s head being turned by what many deem to be the world’s biggest club, we’ve seen time and again with Real Madrid that when they want a player, they publicly go after him and expect it to get done in the end.
Having seen this with Gareth Bale of course, we think everything points towards De Gea slowly working his way out of Old Trafford with Louis van Gaal having taken it upon himself to take the Spanish international out of the firing line while his head is still cloudy with the speculation.
Having now gone past the point of no return in not featuring in United’s first two matchday squads, we’ve seen in the past with the likes of Michael Essien prior to his Chelsea switch that once a player’s mind is elsewhere, it can be incredibly difficult and near on impossible to get them back on side.
After all, who wants to be keeping a player who would rather be playing elsewhere?
Because Sergio Romero has looked confident and assured so far
While stiffer tests will be ahead of course, Sergio Romero has looked bothy confident and assured between the sticks despite not really being tested in the two games he’s faced against Tottenham and Aston Villa thus far.
In many ways, we suppose you’d expect this from a goalkeeper who has played in both the World Cup and Copa America Finals in the last 18 months while boasting 65 senior international caps for Argentina.
Despite that, for the majority of his club career, Romero has spent plenty of time on the bench as a second choice but having not made any costly errors so far – not like Petr Cech – everything is going swimmingly so far in his fledgling Red Devils career.
Because they can command a high fee to reinvest in the squad
According to recent reports by the Daily Mail, the publication claims United could demand up to £35 million from Real Madrid for the services of David De Gea and if this came to avail, he’d then become the most expensive goalkeeper ever in world football.
With Gianluigi Buffon still retaining this record having transferred to Juventus for £32.6 million back in 2001, these are incredible fees for goalkeepers.
But as we saw with the £44 million United received for Angel Di Maria from Paris Saint-Germain, Louis van Gaal is reinvesting that right back into the playing staff via going in hard to sign Barcelona’s Pedro.
With that deal expected to come off relatively soon, we could see the same kind of thing happen with De Gea moving on and United moving for either Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen or Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris (pictured).
This is why it may be in United’s best interests sooner rather than later to release De Gea while sorting out a deal for a top level replacement.
Because he’ll never scale the same heights in his current mindset
Over the last two seasons but especially last, we’ve become accustomed to David De Gea literally saving Manchester United from losing points.
Single-handedly hauling United into the Champions League qualification places, De Gea was an indispensable member of Louis van Gaal’s squad last term while pulling off some absolutely incredible saves.
While he’s of course a professional who is now considered to be world class, can anybody really claim he could scale the same heights in terms of performance in his current mindset?
If you’ve been unsettled or had your head turned via an alternative offer elsewhere, naturally it’d be harder to buckle down while producing your best performances for your current side.
This is exactly why Louis van Gaal has left De Gea out of the Tottenham and Aston Villa games so far.
So the saga can be put to bed once and for all
For Manchester United fans, Real Madrid supporters and neutrals alike, surely we’d all crave a solution to the rather tedious David De Gea transfer situation right now?
Having dragged on right from the end of last season to the present day, everybody has become rather sick and tired of the baby steps in which this proposed deal has been taking over the course of the summer.
At present, everything appears to point towards De Gea achieving a late switch to Real Madrid and as we all know in football, life goes on.
With Louis van Gaal having admitted to the public last week that the situation isn’t good in terms of focus for the club, we now think it’s in both Manchester United and Real Madrid’s best interests to thrash out a deal once and for all.
