Our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern barely know what tomorrow is going to bring at the moment.
It’s just drama after drama at the Emirates right now with the Gunners doing their very best to throw their entire season away in a matter of weeks.
They always seem to do it around now, too, and our landlord simply cannot believe the kind of capitulations they seem to suffer, year in, year out.
Surely, then, Arsene Wenger – if he’s in the job – will want to change things up dramatically in the summer and take on players that might offer something different to what he’s got at the moment.
It may involve taking a few risks on players but that is really what the Gunners need to do if they are to find a new winning formula and so, with that in mind, here are five transfer gambles the club need to take…
Jordan Pickford
Our landlord is a massive fan of Pickford and thinks whilst Jermain Defoe deserves credit for keeping Sunderland afloat the young stopper deserves just as much praise.
It could be a risk for Arsenal to go for him given he’s not played at the sharp end of the table before but he looks like the kind of guy that doesn’t flap easily and with Petr Cech getting on, Pickford could be the ideal successor at the Emirates.
Moussa Dembele
Dembele joined Celtic last summer and has quickly gone about showing us all that he really does have massive potential.
We wondered how he might get on at Celtic after being at Fulham but he’s taken to it like a duck to water. There’s going to be question marks over whether he can make another step up to play for Arsenal but there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be able to.
Andrea Belotti
The Italian is one of the most exciting talents in Serie A and could be destined for greatness if he gets his next move right.
There’s very little chance that he’ll stay at Torino all his career given his goal-scoring prowess and so he needs to move to a club that he’ll settle in quickly at and then be able to kick on with. Arsenal should attempt to make that happen with them, too, as he is hugely promising.
Mauro Icardi
There can be no risk or qualms about the talent Icardi brings, it’s more about the off-field issues he could bring.
The Argentine forward has fallen out with the Inter Milan fans this season despite being the club captain and so Arsenal would have to weigh up whether that could repeat itself at the Emirates. It’s probably unlikely, though, and so the Gunners would be getting a top, tenacious, talent.
Ben Gibson
Arsenal could still do with extra options at the back and Ben Gibson would certainly give them something new in defence.
He’s shown at Middlesbrough he can more than organise a team around him with their defensive displays very strong and so he could be inspired for Arsenal. There’s a risk given he’s not played for a team like the Gunners but there’s every chance he’d relish and embrace a new challenge.
