So far this month Newcastle have spent the most amount of money, with the recent arrival of Jonjo Shelvey from Premier League rivals Swansea City for £12million.
There are yet more deals to be done and it’s highly unlikely that Newcastle’s £12million will be the highest by the end of the window, which falls next Monday evening.
The past two January windows have seen England’s top flight clubs spend collectively £130million, this year may well be different and could eclipse the record of £225 million record with the financial rewards of staying in the Premier League increasing significantly, with £99million to the bottom side and up to £150million to the winners of the Premier League.
With all this activity going on this month it looks as though we here in the Transfer Tavern will be busy, especially our Landlord as he keeps tabs on all the transfer dealings.

Andros Townsend
Spurs are holding out for £14million and Daniel Levy is a master at getting the best deal for his players when they leave White Hart Lane- and it finally looks like this deal will be competed
Newcastle had hoped that the deal would of already been completed by now but they are looking to tie up the transfer by the end of this week, finally agreeing a fee with their fellow Premier League side.
Townsend is keen on a move as he has not played much first team football this season and he wants to be playing so he can be considered for the European Championships in the summer.
Saido Berahino
The want-away West Brom striker still has the price tag of £14million, which seems to have cooled off Tottenham’s interest, and that leaves Steve McClaren in pole position to land the troublesome forward.
Newcastle will meet the high asking price as they are in desperate need of quality proven players, to enhance the young talent they brought in during the summer.
The Magpies have been keeping eyes on the situation and feel that a deal is imminent and they will land their man, to rescue him from his nightmare with The Baggies.
Loic Remy
Remy is looking for a way out of Chelsea as it becomes more apparent that his future lies away from Stamford Bridge, after playing understudy to Diego Costa. Now, with the imminent arrival of Alexandre Pato, he finds himself further down the pecking order.
At this stage though it would only be a loan deal until the new long term manager is appointed at Chelsea, then possibly in the summer the move could become permanent if Remy and the new manager don’t agree on his role at the football club.
Alexandre Lacazette
Newcastle made an approach for Lyon striker as the start of the January window that was rejected by both Lyon and Lacazette, with the player not keen on a move to Tyneside.
However, with no further bids coming in for the striker, Lacazette’s desperation to play in the Premier League means that a deal is now possible.
The French striker would be a marque signing and would command a transfer fee upwards of £28million, which would be a transfer record for Newcastle.
However, with other Premier League clubs monitoring the situation, it may prove difficult to land the outstanding French striker.
Scott Sinclair
The Aston Villa left winger has been a long term target of Steve McClaren and he tried to land him in the summer. With Villa bottom of the Premier League, a deal could now be reached.
Villa look like they are starting to prepare for life in the Championship and are trying to off load some of their talent now to cut the wage bill, with Sinclair being a significant earner.
Sinclair’s transfer fee would be around £3million, as The Toon boss tries to recruit players to not only take Newcastle away from a relegation battle and up the division and contend for a European place.
