Celtic have struggled to get positive results in Europe for a number of years, however, they have started to make inroads into putting in good performances within the continent’s biggest competitions.
The Bhoys have so far managed to beat Rosenborg and Red Bull Leipzig in this season’s Europa League group stage, with the win against the Norwegian outfit their first in a group game for four years, via BBC.
Brendan Rodgers has managed to start restoring some pride to how the Hoops have been playing within European competition, although he has overseen some heavy defeats against Paris Saint-Germain last season.
Celtic are currently in a good position to advance to the knockout stage of the Europa League, knowing that a win against Rosenborg in their next game will give them an excellent chance of progressing.
And, Rodgers’ side could look to take some inspiration from one of their most memorable victories in European competition in recent memory.
A moment in time – Celtic’s 2-1 Barcelona victory 2012
On what was their 125th anniversary, the Parkhead side ran out in front of their home fans with a famous 2-1 victory over Barcelona.
Goals from Victor Wanyama and a teenage Tony Watt netted their goals to give them a chance of reaching the knockout stages, which they managed to do with a victory over Spartak Moscow.
However, since that campaign, the Hoops have failed to progress within European competition on all but one occasion from the group stage, when they were knocked out in the next round by Inter Milan in 2014-15.
Celtic now have a great chance of progressing to the next stage of the tournament under Rodgers and should look to try and draw some inspiration from that famous night six years ago.
The Scottish Premiership side have beaten Rosenborg multiple times in recent campaigns and will feel confident that they can get a result against the Norwegian outfit.
However, Salzburg are yet to taste defeat in the group and Celtic will know that they will need to be at their very best to get a positive result from that game.
With it being played at Parkhead, if the club can put in the performance that they did on that famous night of 2012, as well as most recently against Leipzig, then there is no reason that they can not reach the next stage of the Europa League.
