Our Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern will be hoping that Roman Abramovich will revamp the club this summer and give it a bold new look, one which is totally different from the chopping and changing of managers and players that they have been used to under the Russian’s leadership.
Antonio Conte, for the majority of this season, has faced an uncertain future – much like many managers have been over the years in SW6. From the defeat on the opening day of the season to Burnley, things haven’t seemed right at the Bridge and two abysmal transfer windows have further seen the Italian frustrated with life at Stamford Bridge.
With the turn of the new year came a terrible drop down the table, out of cup competitions, suffering defeats left, right and centre alongside struggling for goals and Premier League wins. All in all, 2018 has not been a good year for Chelsea, and in particular Conte.
Our landlord thinks it’s time to start looking around at other managers to take the hot seat at Stamford Bridge, with a different mentality needed and he has looked at TWO bosses that could be the catalyst for change…
Mauricio Pochettino
The Spurs man has made quite an impression during his stay in England, firstly with Southampton and currently with Tottenham. His faith in younger players and well-organised play would make him a hit inside Stamford Bridge – and would certainly make use of Chelsea’s heavily invested youth academy.
Chelsea haven’t always been big on giving the youngsters a chance to express themselves in the first team and it seems the Argentine is a master when it comes to being able to find the diamond in the rough. This is something that Chelsea don’t make use of enough under current management.
Diego Simeone
Diego Simeone is a similar mould to Conte but adding a lot more fire to the equation. Indeed, he also has similar qualities to ex-boss Mourinho in the fact of bringing a team together to create an ‘us versus them’ mentality.
That’s about where the similarities end, though. Whilst Chelsea’s last two managers have often been stuck in their way, Simeone continues to evolve and change with the times – and that adaptability is just what Chelsea need.
El Cholo has achieved some pretty impressive heights while at Atletico Madrid, reaching two Champions League finals and winning La Liga and the Europa league – all of which makes his stock quite high.
All achieved whilst on a much smaller budget then the Blues have, what our regular like about Simeone is his loyalty and longevity to Atletico Madrid – which is something that Chelsea could learn a thing or two from.
