Adam Matthews would be a very sensible signing for Sheffield Wednesday

Having made a remarkable impression thus far in 2019, Steve Bruce will obviously be inclined to bolster his squad further this summer, so he and his team can show their full potential and finally bring a genuinely huge club back to the top flight of English football.

It’s just been far too long, hasn’t it?

Well, since the former Aston Villa boss took over, it’s been all positive for the Owls as they secured a 12th-place finish, even when their future in the Championship was under threat earlier on in the campaign.

Though, all their hard work throughout the course of the new year would all be for nothing, if they don’t build on that progression this summer.

The wily old operator Bruce is almost certain to push for the players he wants and it makes sense to allow that to happen, given how well he has done in charge. Clearly, a number of positions could well be improved upon, including right-back, with Bruce taking up an interest in signing Sunderland full-back Adam Matthews.

Matthews (who is valued at £1.3 million on Transfermarkt) is out-of-contract in the summer and will depart the Stadium of Light in search of a new challenge.

Sheffield Wednesday, according to reports from Football Insider late last week, are among those interested in the 27-year-old and could view him as a helpful back-up in the right-back and left-back positions.

Having played 28 times in all competitions this season, Matthews was very productive, having helped keep nine clean-sheets while also providing seven assists along the way. That alone shows that what you get with Matthews is a player that is capable of going forward and helping the attack, as well as a reliable player that does his defensive duties well.

Alongside Liam Palmer, the two are both decent options that could help Sheffield Wednesday in their play-off charge next season.

Would you like to see Adam Matthews brought in? If not, why not? Let us know!
