Young winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain starred inArsenal‘s win over Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday night, and became the youngest English player to score in the competition’s history.
The former Southampton man scored the first goal in a 2-1 win, adding to his strike against Shrewsbury last week, surpassing team mate Theo Walcott, who previously held the record.
After an impressive performance the 18-year-old was in line for praise.
“He can go inside, he can go outside, he’s got that injection of pace and I think what he needs now is to be consistent in his play,” Gunners assistant manager Pat Rice told the club’s official website after the victory.
“I am sure that is something he will be working on because he’s certainly not a stupid boy. From Arsenal supporters’ point of view, they are going to be seeing a lot of this boy,” he continued.
Andre Santos had put the home side 2-0 up early in the first half, but the Greek outfit hit back with a goal of their own before the break.
In the end it was a hard fought win for Arsene Wenger’s men, and Rice feels the side competed well.
“For 15-20 minutes we maybe lost our way and they came back into it. Second half we had to knuckle in, fight and get our shape right which I thought we did,” he concluded.
Arsenal now have the North London derby against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday to look forward to, with local bragging rights at stake.
