Didier Drogba’s Chelsea career has seen many headlines write about the striker, whether it be for handballs, scoring goals or diving his Chelsea career has certainly had highs and lows.
Now as Chelsea prepare for yet another ‘massive’ game in their season it seems Drogba has hit the headlines again, this time for the wrong reason.
According to the Daily Express a video recording – shown on Chelsea’s official TV station and repeated on the internet – shows Drogba reacting to the quarter-final draw against Benfica by seemingly performing an act of mock fear.
Chelsea officials immediately claim the matter had been “mis-interpreted” and Drogba’s team-mate and former Benfica star claims Drogba was reacting to the possibility of Chelsea facing European champions Barcelona in the semi-finals, a comment later confirmed by a Chelsea spokesman.
Despite this there is evident anger amongst Benfica fans who see Drogba’s actions as dis-respectful to their club and Portuguese football. Benfica coach Jorge Jesus issued a reminder that his team helped eliminate Manchester United and that Sporting Lisbon knocked Manchester City out of the Europa League.
He went on to add “Drogba was probably joking”, although he added: “You have to remember that Benfica and Sporting have eliminated from Europe the top two teams from England this season.
“That shows the strength of Portuguese football. Any responses we give will be on the pitch to show that we are the better team.”
In an already tricky tie this incident will only spur Benfica on to beat Chelsea and prove the doubters wrong. You have to believe that players actions should be more closely monitored and clubs should be more aware of what is being shown on their website and the rest of the internet.
