Arsenal fans are less than happy after Granit Xhaka was reported to have been chosen as the club’s new permanent captain for the remainder of the season.
According to BBC’s David Ornstein, manager Unai Emery is reported to have consulted his players over the role of captaincy before relaying his decision to them this morning. However, Emery is yet to pick a vice-captain, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in the running.
Xhaka has captained Arsenal in six out their eight fixtures this season, including the recent 3-2 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League. The Swiss midfielder was hooked off after 72 minutes to a chorus of boos and cheers from the north London faithful (via The Metro).
After the announcement from Ornstein that Xhaka will be announced as the new skipper, fans took to Twitter to relay their anger and disappointment at the decision.
Here is a selection of tweets from Gooners:
Very controversial decision! Why choose a captain that most fans don’t even fancy seeing him play???????
