Arsenal fans have been launching a staunch defence of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the centre-forward missed a last-gasp chance to send the Gunners through to the last-16 of the Europa League.
With the side having gone 2-1 down in the 119th minute of the game, Aubameyang saw the ball roll into his path after an attempted clearance from an Olympiakos player deflected off a teammate. However, the Emirates Stadium was left in shock as the usually reliable marksman screwed his shot wide (via BBC).
One fan called him ‘beautiful’.
Look at Auba. He’s broken. He doesn’t deserve this. Thanks for everything you beautiful human being and all the best at the new club https://t.co/rALGRb8OqJ

The striker has been one of the club’s best players this season and has notched up 20 goals in just 31 games across all competitions (via Transfermarkt). Head coach Mikel Arteta claimed that it was his job to lift the players with the outfit still in the FA Cup and just seven points off the top four in the Premier League (via football.london). Fans were very defensive over their star man as they took to Twitter to react to his miss. Here are a selection of tweets:
Feel absolutely bad when I see this pic. The only guy who gives it his all almost every single game only to get abused by our fans when he misses an opportunity to score.
Keep your head high @Aubameyang7 ,my captain. pic.twitter.com/HnXcDJOq9c— P™ (@SemperFiArsenal) February 28, 2020
Personally, I can’t really hold Aubameyang’s miss against him.
It was only his brilliance that almost saw us win the game. His goals have carried this team at times.
He’ll be missed.

Seeing Aubameyang on the verge of crying after that miss has absolutely shattered me honestly…
If I see any abuse against the man who saved our asses on countless occasions this season, I’m instantly blocking you, no questions asked!

Head up @Aubameyang7.
It’s football. It happens. Most of the time you do the business, so when that one moment in a season comes around when it doesn’t happen for you, we’re here to lift you up.
Cracking goal btw! ❤️
