Our Arsenal fans here in the Transfer Tavern have just thrown their pint glasses up in the air this lunchtime with the news from Italian outlet Sportnews that Arsene Wenger will leave the club.
It’s been one of the stories of recent months as the Gunners have once again embarked on their usual season implosion with them hanging on by a thread in the Champions League and out of the Premier League title race.
Plenty here by the bar and, of course, further afield have called for the Frenchman to step down and now it appears that he has told his players that he will do just that – potentially setting up a new era at the club.
Wenger has been at Arsenal since 1996 and in that time has enjoyed all the extremes football can throw at you.
From ‘The Invincibles’ season of 2003/04 to bleaker times in recent years, the Frenchman has tried to steer the club through all of it but it looks like this season has proven one setback too much.
It remains to be seen, of course, whether he does actually go but this report certainly seems to think that his mind has been made up.
