Atletico Madrid prepared to pay £61 million to land Tottenham Hotspur star hailed as the ‘best in the world’

Tottenham Hotspur’s 2024/25 season was one of stark contrasts.

On one hand, they suffered their worst-ever Premier League campaign in modern history, finishing 17th under Ange Postecoglou. On the other, they pulled off a stunning Europa League triumph—beating Manchester United in the final to claim their first major trophy in nearly two decades.

Still, silverware wasn’t enough to save Postecoglou’s job. With Thomas Frank now at the helm, change is sweeping through the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

New signings are expected, with West Ham’s Mohamed Kudus among those being linked with a move to North London, but departures are looming as well.

Atlético Prepared to Go All Out for Romero

One major exit could be that of Christian Romero.

According to a fresh report from AS, Atlético Madrid are prepared to pay as much as £61 million to sign the Argentina international. The Spanish giants see Romero as a key target—and manager Diego Simeone is pushing hard to get the deal over the line.

Simeone, a long-time admirer of physically dominant defenders, has reportedly been in contact with Romero since last winter. The defender is said to be enthusiastic about the move and would arrive in Madrid with full support from the coaching staff and dressing room.

Romero, 26, has two years left on his deal at Spurs. Negotiations between the clubs have been ongoing, and progress could accelerate this week.

If the transfer goes through, Tottenham will be losing a world-class centre-back—and Atlético will be gaining one.

Romero is not only a World Cup winner but was also named Europa League Player of the Season last term. Known for his aggressive but intelligent defending, he was praised by Argentina teammate Alejandro Garnacho—who was on the losing side in the Europa League final.

“We know Cuti, he’s the best centre-back in the world,” Garnacho told ESPN Argentina after the match. “He deserves it, congratulations to him.”

Romero himself appeared to hint at an exit after the final, saying he wanted to leave his “name engraved in Tottenham.” Mission accomplished—now, it seems, the next chapter is calling.
