Manchester United transfer target Mats Hummels has admitted he would consider a move abroad at some point in his career.
The Borussia Dortmund centre back told FourFourTwo that one day he would consider a move abroad. Given United’s recent problems at centre back, Sir Alex Ferguson may wish to try and tempt the 23-year-old away from Germany, sooner rather than later.
Having helped Dortmund to back to back Bundesliga titles, Hummels has established himself as one of Europe’s best defenders, winning 22 German caps in the process. His quality is undoubted. Hummels timing in the tackle is exquisite and he reads the game and distributes the ball out of defence very well. Added to that is his height, strength and pace which surely equip him to be a success in the Premier League.
However, Fergie may have to wait a while to get his man. Hummels only signed a five year contract with Dortmund in July and it certainly appears as if he is no rush to leave the club. With that in mind, you would expect United would have to pay a highly inflated price if the Bundesliga champions were to consider selling their star.
There has been plenty of talk about the Red Devils defence. Injuries to Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have left options sparse at the back. Yet Smalling is expected to return to first team action soon while Vidic and Jones could well be back in the fold by November.
That changes things for Sir Alex Ferguson, who will then have five options at centre back. For all the talk, the situation suddenly does not seem quite so bad. People will point to Rio Ferdinand’s age and whether Vidic can stay fit but both are more than capable of continuing to perform at the highest level.
Hummels looks set for a fantastic future in the game and it’s understandable why Ferguson has expressed an interest in him. He could well be the a future signing but for the moment both the player and United can afford to wait.
