For perhaps the first time, a Premier League club were able to compete with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the transfer market as these shores welcomed a world star at long last.

Still, Sky Sports’ La Liga expert Guillem Balague has revealed that he believes the financial power of the PL big boys has promoted both Los Blancos and the Blaugrana into tying down their top talent.
Neymar and Gareth Bale are the latest to have extended their deals at the Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabeu, with both players previously linked with the Red Devils.
Meanwhile, Luis Suarez has recently been touted as a potential Man United target.
With more illustrious talent likely to follow in their footsteps, Balague believes the Spanish giants are making moves to prevent tempting English offers.
“It’s interesting why it is happening. Real Madrid are spending 31 million Euros more on wages for next season in their budget to stop the Premier League poaching those players,” Balague told Sky Sports News HQ.
“It is the threat of the Premier League that both Josep Maria Bartomeu and Florentino Perez are worried about because of the financial power and to keep the same kind of competitiveness that they have, both teams want to keep those players and be able to compete.”
