Barcelona: Fans respond to Frenkie de Jong’s apology after defeat to Granada

This season hasn’t began smoothly for Barcelona.

The Catalans are usually sitting pretty near the top of La Liga by this stage, but a culmination of things – which has included injuries to the likes of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele – have left the Blaugrana eighth in the Spanish top-flight after five matches.

Last week, Barca were lucky not to fall to defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, as Marco Reus missed a penalty for the Germans which saw the tie end goalless. Five days later and the club returned to league action against La Liga newcomers Granada, in a match that on paper you would have expected them to win quite comfortably.

Things went from bad to worse for the Spaniards, however, as Granada beat Ernesto Valverde’s men 2-0 at the Estadio de Los Cármenes. After the game, the only player who went over to apologise to the travelling Barcelona supporters was midfielder Frenkie de Jong – a small gesture that has clearly gone down extremely well with fans of the club on Twitter:
