Liverpool and Newcastle United will go head to head in the fight for the signature of young Dutch starlet Luuk De Jong who has attracted all sorts of attention over the last 12 months.
The 21 year old has been the subject of numerous scouting trips from Newcastle United however Liverpool have emerged as strong challengers for the FC Twente striker.
De Jong has currently played just over fifty league matches for Twente and scored 21 goals in the process. At 21 he has already made three appearances for the Netherlands and a fee of around £10m would probably be enough to tempt the Dutch side into selling.
Liverpool are still keen to add one more striker after the sale of David N’Gog to Bolton Wanderers in the summer whilst Newcastle United still have a good chunk of the Andy Carroll money to invest in upcoming talent. Although Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew was hoping to bring another striker in last summer, time quickly run out although one would doubt there have been many complaints what with the form of Leon Best and Demba Ba who have fire the Tyneside club into third in the Premiership table.
Liverpool are still slightly concerning with regards to their depth in the striker department. With only Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez out and out forwards, and with the aging Dirk Kuyt normally played out on the wing, Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool have defined that area as one for improvement in both numbers and quality.
