Birmingham close to Kuranyi capture

Gawthaman Gobinath 29 December 2009, 14:28 2 minutes read

kuranyiThe Daily Mirror is reporting that Birmingham City are moving closer to securing the signing of German international, Kevin Kuranyi, from Schalke 04.

Kuranyi’s contract ends in June and is available for £3.5million in January as his club look to cash in on the striker while they can. The 27-year-old has held talks with Birmingham and if a move is completed he will become the highest paid player in their history as he is requesting wages of £3million a year. The funds provided by Carson Yeung make these demands viable for Birmingham City, but McLeish will be wary of the impact it could have on the rest of his squad. Having one player earning significantly more than the rest of the squad could damage morale, and City’s success has been built on a tight-knit dressing-room.

McLeish is looking to add a striker to his side as despite their impressive run in the league, goals have been hard to come by with Chucho struggling to hit the back of the net. Nikola Zigic is another target but Kuranyi is more likely as new owner Carson Yeung is keen for the club to sign a high-profile striker to boost it’s marketability in the Far East.

Kuranyi is a powerful forward who is formidable in the air; he has an impressive record in the Bundesliga with 101 goals to his name. He Kuranyi speaks English fluently which should help him settle in the Premier League quickly. His signing would be a real coup for Birmingham City.

[Is there any substance to this and should this rumour Fly or Die?]
