With Chelsea’s start to the Premier League failing to live up to standards that both Manchester City and Manchester United have set, Andre Villas-Boas is already thinking about how he will strengthen his side come the January transfer window.
Italian sources have now identified that Borussia Dortmund duo Ilkay Gundogan and Nevan Subotic as Villas-Boas’ preferred targets.
Although a January move for Gundogan is unlikely, as the player only joined Dortmund as recently as May, he may well be subject of a bid from the Blues next summer should he continue to impress. Good performances in his first few games for Dortmund, as well as his exceptional form for FC Nurnberg last season, have drawn the attention of many of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United also thought to be interested in Under-21 international.
Subotic, an integral part of Dortmund’s Bundesliga winning side from last season, is no stranger to being at the center of advances from big European clubs, having been one of football’s hottest properties this summer.
Unfortunately for his admirers however, Subotic reaffirmed his commitment to Dortmund, and signalled his intention to see out his contract at the club. Chelsea, and Villas-Boas, will however be hoping that Dortmund’s poor start to the season domestically, and relatively poor chances of Champions League success, will be enough to convince the young defender that a move to Stamford Bridge could be the best thing for him.
Subotic has gone on record previously saying that it is a dream of his to one day play in the Premier League, and should Roman Abramovich keep faith with Villas-Boas, not always a strong point of the Russian billionaire, then Subotic may find his dream coming true sooner rather than later.
