Tottenham Hotspur are not renowned for their extravagant approach to the transfer market, far from it in fact, but recent reports suggest that they will have to fork out a club-record fee to secure the signature of one of Europe’s hottest prospects.
According to a recent report from Harry Hotspur, Christian Pulisic is Mauricio Pochettino’s biggest transfer target, according to a source close to the blog.
But it’s not only Pochettino who is expressing an interest. Daniel Levy is a notorious businessman with a keen eye for a shrewd transfer deal, and the report claims that his interest in Pulisic’s commercial potential has made him a fellow admirer.
In recent years Pulisic has been the golden boy for Dortmund’s vociferous yellow wall to salivate over, but Jadon Sancho’s rise has seen him fade into obscurity this season.
Naturally, his struggle for first-team opportunities has evoked interest from outside the club, with Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea among those reportedly interested.
According to a recent report from the Daily Telegraph, Dortmund are willing to cash in on Pulisic in a deal worth £70 million, providing he remains in Germany until next summer.
On the surface, £70 million is an extortionate transfer fee for Levy to part with, but his potential to develop into one of the most devastating wingers in world football will naturally dictate the asking price.
Pulisic, 20, promises blossom into the most talented player to emerge from the USA in their entire history, and that makes him a commercial proposition worth his weight in gold.
Not only would Spurs be signing a fantastic player for the future, they would be tapping into a vast commercial market which could form the foundations of a whole new fan-base across the Atlantic.
How Levy will approach this conundrum remains to be seen but, if Spurs want to continue to compete with Europe’s elite, it’s a deal which he should be willing to sanction.
