A number of Celtic fans took to Twitter to voice their disagreement with a tweet posted by Hoops supporter @BG1954 in which he heralded the contribution of Jonny Hayes on Sunday, saying that the 32-year-old “never hides when wearing the hoops and put in another good shift today”.

The Republic of Ireland international came on as an early substitute for the injured Greg Taylor against Aberdeen and had one gilt-edged chance to score in the second half when the teams were level at 1-1, shooting straight at Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis when clean through on goal (as per BBC). Thankfully for him, Kristoffer Ajer popped with an 81st-minute winner for the Hoops.
Hayes’ performance against his former club came in for plenty of criticism from reporters after the game. Sourav Mahanty of thecelticbhoys.com described his display as “absolutely shambolic”, characterised by that miss and some poor crossing, while David Walton of 67hailhail.com felt that he was “poor” and “offered little”. Read Celtic‘s Amy Canavan also lamented the quality of his crossing but felt that he was “solid at the back”.

These Hoops fans on Twitter also stuck the boot into Hayes afterwards and took umbrage with the views presented by @BG1954, with one observer deriding the 32-year-old as a “terrible footballer”:
You must be joking? He had a mare.

Yes he works hard and puts in a shift but He is terrible footballer, technically poor, lacks awareness, I could go on
And on. should be no where near our team and their is no way he should be offered another contract.— Socbhoy (@socbhoy) February 16, 2020
You couldn’t have watched that today and genuinely thought he was good. Absolutely no chance

He had a very poor game – crossing was wild, rarely got past his man, missed a decent chance and was probably our worst player. He looked nervy out there.

Could have cost us 2 points with his greed. Just doesn’t have the quality to play for Celtic sadly.

He was dreadful when he came on. Gave the ball easy countless times and his distribution and deceiving making were terrible.

Was pretty poor today to be honest
