A lot of Celtic fans are reacting to a photo posted by a fan taken before the 1984 fixture against Rapid Vienna at Old Trafford.
It was a semi-final tie against the Austrian side and the fanbase of the Scottish club will not have fond memories of the matches. The Hoops had lost the first leg 3-1 and it was an embarrassing defeat due to the bad-tempered manner in which they lost the game, as they were down to ten men and also accused of stamping, via The Guardian.
However the Bhoys turned the deficit around in the second leg, winning 4-3 on aggregate, or so they thought as Vienna goalkeeper Herbert Feurer fell to the floor claiming he had been hit by a projectile thrown by a Celtic fan.
This caused UEFA to ask for the match to be replayed at Old Trafford, and Vienna won the game 1-0 and therefore progressed to the European Cup final, but the score wasn’t the worst part, as fans attacked both the opposition goalkeeper and the goalscorer, via The Guardian.
Fans of the club can only try to forget that night in Manchester as one commented saying that it was an “awful night”, but it has definitely gone down in football history as an event that you will hopefully not see again.
