Plenty of Celtic fans have been reacting to comments made by striker Leigh Griffiths in the club’s media conference on Thursday (as per Celtic FC on YouTube, via @CelticFC on Twitter).
Ahead of tomorrow’s Scottish Cup meeting with Clyde, the 29-year-old told reporters: “I’ve still got a bit to go, but as long as I’m contributing to the team, then that’s only going to help me. But it’s not about me, it’s about the team. Now, we want to progress on Sunday.”

Griffiths has enjoyed a prolific start to 2020, with Neil Lennon’s switch to a 3-5-2 formation from his previously preferred 4-2-3-1 resulting in the Scotland international starting every Premiership match since the mid-season break. His goal against Motherwell on Wednesday night was his fourth in all competitions since the break and his seventh of the season, having previously gone five months without finding the net (as per TransferMarkt).
It hasn’t all been plain sailing for the 29-year-old in recent times, though. He has been castigated by Charlie Nicholas and Kris Boyd over goal celebrations that were perceived to be provocative, while he reacted to being substituted at Kilmarnock by appearing to throw sock tape in the direction of some of the home fans at Rugby Park (according to the Daily Record). Also, as per the Daily Express, he was alleged to have stamped on Hamilton’s Sam Woods last Sunday but will not face disciplinary action following a review of the incident from the Scottish FA (as per Sky Sports). Last year, he had taken time out of football due to a battle with depression (as per BBC).
Griffiths’ upturn in form in front of goal, and the manner in which has overcome previous difficulties, has earned him praise from these Celtic fans on Twitter:
Brilliant to see you back doing what you do best ✅✅👍👍☘️☘️

So happy for Leigh. Put up with some level of nonsense this last year and overcome. Brilliant by the club as well, proud to see us taking mental health awareness seriously #HailHail
