Celtic held their nerve yesterday as they edged out St Johnstone 1-0 in the Scottish League Cup quarter-final at McDiarmid Park. The Hoops would have been hoping their trip to Perth would be an easier one but it wasn’t so and it took a late Leigh Griffiths goal to win it. However, in the dying minutes, Dedryck Boyata was sent off for what appeared to be dissent, and the Hoops are livid.

What matters at the end of the day is the result and Celtic won the match at St Johnstone, however, when you see one of your best players sent off for apparent dissent against a referee you can’t help but be fuming. It’s not unusual to see a yellow card when a player oversteps the mark, but Boyata was shown a straight red for what he said and the Bhoys are desperate to get it rescinded on appeal.
If the club’s appeal against the decision to send off the defender is unsuccessful then Brendan Rodgers will have to plan for the semi-final clash in the Scottish League Cup against Hearts without his star centre-back. The 27-year-old will be key to the club getting back on track in the league after some shaky results and he’ll need to keep his head and hold his tongue to ensure he doesn’ get anymore needless sending offs.

You can understand the Celtic fans’ frustration with the Boyata sending off and hopefully the defender will have his ban overturned on appeal.
