Sometimes in football, things happen that are too coincidental for the fans to believe that they are just coincidences. One of those events happened yesterday. Celtic hosted Kilmarnock in their first game since the passing of their #5 wearing 1967 European Cup winning skipper Billy McNeill, and the winner yesterday had spooky similarities.

The 1967 European Cup was won by Celtic, and the captain of that incredible side was Billy McNeill. The Hoops’ skipper wore the number five shirt at Parkhead, and yesterday saw Jozo Simunovic, the Bhoys’ current number five, open the scoring against Killie in the 67th minute, a scary coincidence given the fact they were commemorating the former Celtic hero.
To date, that 1967 European Cup win is the biggest achievement in the history of the famous Glasgow club and the chances are it won’t ever be topped. Billy McNeill will be sorely missed by all those who knew him and watched him playing for Celtic, but they can take comfort from the fact he was looking down on his former side, and the fact that their winner came from #5 on 67 minutes will have been the legend’s last way of putting a smile on the faces of the green and whites.

The Hoops were all left emotional and teary when seeing the coincidences in Simunovic’s winner and will have loved the amazing tributes to their former captain throughout.
