Celtic: Fans recall league and cup double in 1988 centenary season

On this day in 1988, Celtic won the double in their centenary year and the club have posted tweets remembering this great day. This has caused a lot of fans to rave over that historic team.

Twenty years on from their amazing achievement of being the first British team to win a European Cup in 1967, via Transfermarkt, the Scottish side approached the 100-year anniversary of their foundation and it would be a season to go down in folklore as they won the league and the Scottish Cup, via Celtic.

The 20-year anniversary of their European Cup triumph saw 1967 captain Billy McNeil brought back as manager and he led the Hoops to a double which was secured by a 2-1 victory against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup final, as per thecelticwiki.

One fan clearly believes it is a great moment in the club’s history as they said: ‘Brought back a lot of memories, brilliant day and special year.’ Obviously to have won the league on its own would have still capped off a good centenary season, but to complete the double makes it an incredible one that remains a fond memory for many Hoops supporters.

One of my favourite seasons as a whole as a Hoops supporter. So many late dramatic wins that season, with the beating Hearts in the semi-final a personal favourite of mine. Up against a cash rich Rangers too. What a team!!
