Former Celtic icon Frank McAvennie was in disbelief as to why manager Neil Lennon publically spoke out about their pursuit of Ben Davies.
McAvennie not impressed
The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Parkhead and reports suggested that personal terms were agreed with the Lancashire club.
Lennon was happy to offer an update on the progression of the club’s pursuit for him, only to tell reporters just days later that he was “gazumped” by Liverpool.

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie could not understand why Lennon was all bells and whistles about the move.
“Why was Lenny talking about it,” he said. “Keep it under wraps until it is done.
“I am not saying that is what caused it, but it is not good for the fans. The fans would rather have not heard anything than have got excited.
“When Billy McNeill did business nobody knew about it. He was good at it.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
It’s no secret that the 2020/21 campaign has been a season to forget for Celtic, especially now that it looks highly unlikely that 10-in-a-row can be achieved by anything other than a total miracle.
On the transfers subject, it has been supremely poor. The likes of Vasilis Barkas and Shane Duffy have attracted reports that transfer guru Nick Hammond’s position could be in danger.
This incident is the unfortunate icing on their dismal cake. Lennon should have known better to keep transfer activity quiet – and thus failed to replace crocked star Christopher Jullien, which is a crucial mistake given their defensive woes.
