Celtic: Kieran Devlin suggests Celtic do not need ‘desperate improvements’ in January

In a recent discussion on The Athletic website, Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin suggested that the club do not need to make ‘desperate additions’ in the January transfer window, and insists that Neil Lennon is misusing his squad at present.

Despite the fact that Celtic find themselves 13 points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers, have had a dismal European campaign and were knocked out in the second round of the Scottish League Cup by Ross County, Devlin recently stated his belief that Neil Lennon’s side do not require major additions in January in order to get their season back on track.

Writing on a discussion on The Athletic, he said: “I sincerely believe this is a very good squad being misused, rather than the players not being individuals of the required standard. It doesn’t need lots of desperate additions. We know many of these players’ quality given what they’ve produced for Celtic in the past, but they have since regressed.”

Transfer Tavern Take

From Devlin’s comment, it would appear as if the journalist is suggesting that Celtic’s squad is more than capable of going on to win the title but that the players are currently being ‘misused’.

This is not exactly a glowing endorsement for under-fire Celtic boss Neil Lennon, however, using Devlin’s logic regarding Celtic’s players, the same could also be applied to the 49-year-old, in that Lennon has overseen five Scottish Premiership title-winning campaigns at the club.

While this is by no means a defence of Lennon, as Celtic have unquestionably been below par this season, perhaps the argument could be made that his side have been made to look a great deal worse by their rival’s rather remarkable form, as Steven Gerrard’s side have dropped just four points over their 16 league games this term, scoring 45 goals while conceding just three.

In other Celtic news, one journalist has claimed that the Bhoys could make a bold January decision regarding their £8.55m-rated ace, find out more here!
