Celtic: Fans reminisce over historic European triumph following club post

A lot of the Celtic fanbase are reminiscing over a great day in the Scottish side’s history as the club posted on Twitter that it was on this day, (May 25th), in 1967 that they won their first and only European trophy.

It could be argued that this is the biggest day in the entire history of the club as they became the first British team to win a European Cup, via Transfermarkt.

It was also an amazing campaign as Celtic completed a clean sweep of all five competitions they entered which included the league, League Cup, Scottish Cup, Glasgow Cup and the European Cup, per thecelticwiki. The squad were dubbed ‘The Lisbon Lions‘ in honour of their success.

It wasn’t an easy victory for the side as they faced Italian giants Inter Milan in the final, who were massive favourites. Inter had lost only once in the European Cup in four successive seasons, winning the trophy twice whilst their only loss came at the hands of Real Madrid, per Transfermarkt, but the Lisbon Lions managed to win the tie 2-1 and claim the silverware.

Unfortunately it remains their only success on the continent and it may be a struggle to ever replicate it, given they have only reached the knockout rounds three times since the turn of the century and the fact that Scottish football isn’t a great standard these days (BBC Sport).

Here is what the fans had to say following the club post:
