Former Scotland international Alan Hutton has blasted Celtic’s decision to go to Dubai, believing even more pressure has been heaped on the Hoops after Christopher Jullien tested positive for COVID-19.
On their return, chief executive Peter Lawwell defended the trip, along with manager Neil Lennon, to which they stated that the camp was approved by all relevant footballing authorities and the Scottish Government. Despite this, Jullien tested positive for the virus while 13 other first-team players are having to self-isolate (via the club’s official website).
As a result, an under-strength side was fielded during their 1-1 draw against Hibernian, falling further behind Steven Gerrard’s side in the standings.
Hutton was not impressed in the slightest, reacting after the Jullien news and slamming the decision to take the trip.
“It’s crazy. Honestly, I remember after the Rangers game, I found out they were going away and I was thinking it’s just not right,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“They’ve just turned a corner, they’re picking up in form, they’ve just got beat in an Old Firm game and now they’re going to Dubai with everything that is going on in the world, it just didn’t sit right and it’s obviously the same opinion as a lot of people.
“When they came back and I heard of the one test and then it was 13 isolating, I said that honestly, they’re just making it so difficult for themselves at the moment. You just don’t want that.
“If they came back and there were no positive tests, right, maybe it’d have been okay but it just shows that they were in the wrong.
“Before the game, I was saying if they don’t get a win here, it’s going to be even worse. To draw the game piles on pressure again.”

Celtic will have known that their domestic success had to come to an end at some point, but who would have thought it would cease in such a dismal fashion?
