Celtic were in a rough patch before the match against Lille as their three games before that fixture had seen them lose two and draw one, and they suffered yet another setback at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.
The mood hasn’t been great, with the Hoops receiving their fair share of criticism, and it is vital that Neil Lennon reverses the slump sooner rather than later – their Europa League clash with Lille on Thursday got off to the perfect start in that regard.
The Bhoys eventually drew 2-2 though, and former Scottish international Alan Hutton believes Celtic’s defence has become a major issue for Lennon.
What Hutton said about Celtic’s defence
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “When you’re 2-0 up with 60-odd minutes to go, you’ve got to be feeling confident. Again, set pieces let the side down.
“One of the biggest Achilles heels for Neil Lennon and Celtic right now is getting these set pieces right. Conceding when you’re 2-0 up away from home against a very good Lille side, you’ve got to make sure you’re disciplined.
“I don’t understand and I’m sure Lennon’s scratching his head, because they’re a very big, powerful side, how this is happening. They’re silly mistakes – lapses of concentration, not clearing their lines – they’ve got to get that right.”
Is the former defender right about Celtic?
Before facing Lille, the Hoops defence had leaked eight goals, so there was definitely some evidence to claim that they have some issues at the back.
If Lennon wants the club to get out of these poor performances, then he needs to find a solution to improve the back line. They have the quality and they need to start performing to their abilities or they may just cost their gaffer his job.
