According to The Athletic's Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin, Ange Postecoglou wants at least one midfielder in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Summer signings; Rogic’s injury…

The Hoops brought in 12 players over the summer, with youngster Liam Shaw and experienced Irishman James McCarthy the only two arrivals in central midfield. The pair have struggled under Postecoglou, though, with the former yet to turn out for the first team and the latter making just three starts.

One man who has been a regular in midfield is Tom Rogic, but he is set to be sidelined for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury, and Devlin has now stated that Postecoglou wants to add to his midfield ranks during the winter window.

The Latest: Devlin’s comments

Devlin ran a Q&A on The Athletic on Saturday to discuss the game against Livingston and he was asked by one fan about the prospects of midfield additions, along with whether or not the club are still after summer target Patrick Berg from Bodo/Glimt.

Here is what Devlin had to say in reply:

“I like Berg but wouldn't be surprised if the boat has been missed after his performance against Roma. Postecoglou definitely wants at least one midfielder in January but whether or not he gets them - and they suit the system - can only wait and see.”

The Verdict: A smart move?

Postecoglou has relied heavily on Rogic, Callum McGregor and David Turnbull in midfield this season, with the likes of Ismaila Soro, Nir Bitton and McCarthy barely featuring from the start.

On that basis, bringing in another midfielder who Postecoglou wants could be a smart move, especially following Rogic’s injury.

The Australia midfielder will be back before the New Year barring disaster, but having multiple options instead of consistently relying on three regulars may help the Hoops in the second half of the season.
