Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has talked about the uncertainties surrounding Celtic target Alfie Doughty’s future and fitness.
Celtic were linked with a move to sign Doughty and they had made multiple attempts to sign the Charlton man in the summer. The Hoops had made two bids to sign the Englishman, but they had failed with every offer. They were expected to make a third offer for him, but it never came (as per the Scottish Sun).
Should Celtic sign Alfie Doughty in January?
It was reported that since Doughty’s contract at Charlton was to run out in the summer of 2021, the Hoops could look to sign him a pre-contract deal in January instead. However, 20-year-old hasn’t featured for Charlton since October because of a hamstring injury.
Bowyer comments on Celtic target Doughty
When talking about Doughty’s fitness, Bowyer said that the youngster is looking to come back from a ‘difficult’ injury. He revealed that while Charlton want him to hand him a new deal, there is no assurance that he’ll come back as the same player.
The Addicks boss said:
“We have to look and see how he comes back from injury – he’s already had one setback before he even got off the bed. It’s such a difficult injury that he’s trying to come back from for someone of his age.
“Of course we want him to sign, but he has to be careful as well. If he comes back none of us know if he’ll be the same player – because his game is all about pace and he has done his hamstring.
“For Alfie, at this young age, it’s a bad one to have. No-one knows how he is going to come back yet. Rehab is really, really important for him. If he comes back and he’s the Alfie of before and decided not to sign the contract then that is something we’ll have to revisit.
A fit Doughty can add depth to Celtic’s first-team
For Charlton in the 2019/20 season, Doughty had contributed to five goals in 29 Championship appearances for the side. This season before injury, the 20-year-old had contributed to three goals in seven League One appearances.
Doughty has played in multiple positions throughout his extremely young career and because of that, the youngster can add depth to many positions on the pitch for Celtic.
If he is indeed available on a pre-contract basis and can prove his fitness, Celtic should try their best to sign him, but the news that he may not even be the same player they scouted months ago will be a huge concern.
