Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has revealed that youngster Adam Montgomery is viewed as the club’s future first-choice left-back.
The Lowdown: Montgomery under Postecoglou
The 19-year-old has been a regular in the matchday squad this season, failing to make the squad on just two occasions. He’s turned out on 18 occasions in all competitions and started in four of Celtic’s six Europa League group games.
Montgomery registered his first assist as a Hoops player against Aberdeen back in October and has featured as a left-back, left midfielder and left-winger.
The Latest: Devlin’s claim
Kieran Devlin shared a transfer mailbag on The Athletic on Wednesday, where he was asked about the possibility of the Hoops bringing in a new left-back.
He revealed that he hasn’t heard of any movement at left-back, with Reo Hatate, who can play at left-back, looking likely to be a midfield signing.
Devlin then claimed that a source close to the dressing room has admitted that the plan is for Greg Taylor to be the first-choice left-back for now, with Montgomery hopefully developing for the role in time.
How many more signings do Celtic need this month?
The Verdict: Smart move?
It seems as if Postecoglou has high hopes for Montgomery, who he described as having ‘tremendous composure’ earlier this season.
Celtic managed to cope without Taylor for 17 games, with Montgomery, Josip Juranovic and outcast Boli Bolingoli all featuring. Taylor has now returned from injury, and it seems as if imminent arrival Hatate will be able to provide cover at left-back if required too.
So, on that basis, a move for a left-back, with Styles and Hickey linked, doesn’t seem to be pivotal over the coming weeks due to the club’s hopes for Montgomery.
