Former Celtic icon Frank McAvennie believes that captain Scott Brown will be brought back into the side to face Hearts in the Scottish Cup final on Sunday.
The 35-year-old was benched by manager Neil Lennon during his side’s last two games in favour of 22-year-old Ivorian youngster Ismaila Soro, after a poor start to the 2020/21 campaign saw the Scot lose his place in the side.
Brown has featured 24 times in all competitions this season and has already picked up eight yellow cards (TransferMarkt). But there are no guarantees that he will wear the armband as his side walk out at Hampden Park on Sunday.
Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie believes that the skipper will be brought back in, but added that it is not a good idea to do so.
“I am hearing whispers that Neil Lennon is going to change it back for the cup final,” he said.
“He wants to be faithful to the boys that have got him to the Cup final. My thoughts would be – keep the run going.
“I like the enthusiasm that Soro and Turnbull have brought to the team and that has brought the best out of McGregor.
“If he brings the old boys back they might get slaughtered for not having the energy. It is a hard one but I would keep the young boys on.
“I would keep Scott on the bench until late on and then bring him on so he can lift the cup.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
Soro has been playing well for Celtic recently and he will feel hard done by with sentimental values mean that he loses his place.
Lennon has some decisions to make as he tries to ease the pressure on his shoulders, with segments of the Parkhead faithful desperately unhappy with how the team is performing this season.
Time will tell what the Irish tactician opts to go with as kick-off draws closer.
