Celtic: Frank McAvennie gives verdict on why Bhoys stuck by Neil Lennon -Celtic News

Former Celtic star Frank McAvennie believes that the fan unrest at Parkhead played a huge role in the club backing manager Neil Lennon.

Lennon under the magnifying glass

The Irish tactician has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, with his side 13 points off the pace in comparison to arch-rivals Rangers in their pursuit of 10-in-a-row.

Before Thursday’s Europa League tie against Lille, the Bhoys are yet to win a game in Europe this season and have already been knocked out of the competition (via BBC Sport).

Who did Larsson make his debut against?

Taking this into account, segments of the Parkhead faithful have been deeply unhappy with Lennon, organising huge protests against him and pleading with the board to sack him to “save the 10.”

Despite this, the club released a statement backing the manager and his backroom staff as Celtic look to turn their season around.

Speaking with Football Insider, McAvennie believes that the recent discontent from the stands may have played a part in the likes of Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell making the decision that they did.

“I think the situation with the fans protests have not helped,” he said.

“I think Dermot has taken a stance on it, that the sections of fans protesting do not run the club.

“I feel for the fans because they have never had a challenge. The fans have not accepted that they might not win and Rangers are not going away.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

It’s a huge call to keep Lennon, considering the current situation that the club is in and with the restlessness from a section of the fan base.

That being said, with the club having won nine-straight titles already, it could be deemed as harsh for Celtic to make such a drastic call midway through the campaign.

While Desmond and Lawwell have backed Lennon, they will be watching his progression through the 2020/21 campaign closely, in the hope that he can turn their season around. If he doesn’t, then the fans who protested may get their wish.
