Giorgos Giakoumakis is 'just about match fit' ahead of Celtic's Europa League trip to Ferencvaros, The Athletic's Kieran Devlin says.

The lowdown

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou said ahead of the weekend trip to Motherwell that Giakoumakis felt 'ready to make an impact' after improving his physical condition over the course of the international break.

Giakoumakis didn't the start the game, with Kyogo Furuhashi leading the line instead, but he did come on in the 73rd minute.

Now Celtic are preparing to Hungarian champions Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hoops sit bottom of Group G after a narrow loss to Real Betis and a thumping one at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.

The latest

Devlin was asked by a supporter in The Athletic's matchday discussion for the latest on Giakoumakis.

"He's just about match fit as far as I understand," he wrote in reply.

But he thinks Ange Postecoglou will be focused on 'easing him in', with Furuhashi first choice in that position for now.

The verdict

If Giakoumakis is indeed being eased in, then it seems unlikely that he'd start against the Budapest-based outfit.

Instead, he might be given more time to make an impact from the bench than he was at the weekend.

Ask too much of him too soon, and that good work he did at Lennoxtown earlier this month could all be undone.
