Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has been giving his opinion on whether Callum McGregor will feature against Rangers this evening.

The Lowdown: Postecoglou’s comments

Ange Postecoglou spoke to the media on Tuesday ahead of the crucial Glasgow Derby, revealing that the midfielder has ‘a chance’ of returning this evening.

It was only last week when the Celtic boss labelled McGregor’s facial injury against Alloa Athletic as ‘significant’ and expected a long term layoff. However, he appears to be in line for a swift return after missing two games and could be wearing a protective mask at Celtic Park.

The Latest: Devlin reacts

Devlin ran a Q&A on The Athletic prior to the Glasgow Derby. He was asked by one fan for his thoughts on McGregor and what the odds were on the captain starting this evening.

This is what Devlin had to say in reply, believing there is a high chance following Postecoglou’s comments and thinks it would be ‘very odd’ and would ‘deflate quite a few people’ if he doesn’t.

“Think they're high, as would think it very odd that Postecoglou explicitly mentions him if he's then not going to start. Think it would deflate quite a few people if the line-ups come out and not see his name starting, after he was named yesterday!”

The Verdict: Spot on

Postecoglou is straight to the point and doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to press conferences.

Therefore, McGregor must have a real shot of featuring from the off this evening, in what would be a major boost for the Hoops. He’s been a regular all season, with Postecoglou hailing the 28-year-old’s ‘massive’ role both on and off the pitch.

Postecoglou went with Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Nir Bitton in a three-man midfield against Dundee United on Saturday, and with the latter suspended following his red card, McGregor could slot straight back in alongside the January signings.
