Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes that Frank Lampard could have the same financial impact at Celtic that Steven Gerrard has had at Rangers.
The 2020/21 campaign has been a disaster for the Bhoys as they currently sit 20 points behind their arch-rivals with a game in hand.
This has led to mass protests against Neil Lennon, with his job looking in huge doubt due to the fact that 10-in-a-row is almost certainly off the table.
Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire suggested that Lampard could have the financial impact that Gerrard had on arch-rivals Rangers.
He said: “If you take a look at Rangers, when Steven Gerrard went there in 2018, their commercial revenue was just over £5million and that doubled to £10m in 12 months. So Steven Gerrard is a saleable asset.
“If you’re a commercial partner, who do you want your product to be pictured next to? With no disrespect to Connor Goldson or any other player, Gerrard is probably the biggest person at Rangers.
“I think Lampard would certainly have a similar status at Celtic.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
Maguire is spot on. There will be plenty of people tuning in to witness the battles between Lampard and Gerrard in Scotland – bringing a potential increase in revenues with them.
A football club is always a reflection of the people that are representing it – Lampard’s professional mannerisms could certainly attract further sponsorship deals and excite the supporters once more.
That being said, there are no signs that Lennon is to be sacked as of yet. We will most likely have to wait until the summer to see if any changes take place.
