Celtic pundit Frank McAvennie has urged the club to land Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis in January, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Insider’s claim

The Hoops brought in Carter-Vickers on deadline day over the summer on a season-long loan. Celtic, as they do with Jota, do have the option to make the centre-back’s stay permanent.

Since arriving, the USA international has been an ever-present figure under Ange Postecoglou, missing just one Scottish Premiership fixture and helping Celtic win the Scottish League Cup.

The Daily Record claimed that a permanent switch could cost the Hoops £10m, however, Tottenham insider John Wenham revealed earlier this month that the figure would likely be closer to £3m.

The Latest: McAvennie’s comments

McAvennie was talking to Football Insider about Carter-Vickers and the possibility of making his loan permanent for £3m.

This is what he had to say in reply, urging the Hoops to do just that in the New Year.

“Starfelt wasn’t quite at it against Hibs.

“For me, he was a bit sloppy. He was letting his man get past him far too easily.

“You could see that for the goal Hibs scored. Carter-Vickers on the other hand was brilliant.

“I’m starting to really like him. He’s been really solid in recent weeks.

“For me, he’s been the one who has played a big role in improving that defence.

“Joe Hart also has to take massive credit for that but Carter-Vickers has been playing every game for a reason.

“If it’s only going to cost £3million I would get that done in January, pay the money.

“Then he’s ours and we don’t need to worry about it.”

The Verdict: No brainer…

At a fee of around £3m, a permanent switch for Carter-Vickers should be a no brainer.

Celtic have had a number of injuries this season, however, Carter-Vickers has remained fit throughout and has had a number of partners.

Not only that, but the 23-year-old has also been the club’s best performing centre-back, with no other playing making more clearances or being dribbled past fewer times per 90. [WhoScored]

The Hoops forked out £4.5m for Carl Starfelt in the summer, so £3m for Carter-Vickers looks like it could be a bargain in January.
